Inserting Self Care even when Winter has Come

For those of us who are not by the seaside enjoying the ocean breeze and basking in 70 degree plus weather, winter has come. The cold is a constant reminder of the many days ahead where a cup of hot chocolate seems to be the only thing that makes sense. New Years resolutions that include exercise and healthy eating have become buried beneath munchies that pack on winter pounds. We tell ourselves that we will get to it as we approach spring but why not now?

How do we insert self care in a season that makes us want to hibernate and embark on not so healthy habits? Here are a few tips.

  • As the cold sets in, add a little spice to your life – spices such as onion, garlic, ginger and turmeric help to improve immune function. Give yourself extra protection during the flu and cold season.
  • Shorter days and longer nights, more sleep goes a long way – take advantage of  hibernation season; your body will desire sleep more. Use the longer evenings for relaxation and head to bed earlier.
  • Ward off the winter blues with a little mindfulness and meditation – a regular practice of deep breathing and rearranging negative thoughts can help you through the season.
  • Don’t let the cold stop you…work that body – If heading to the gym in the cold is daunting, exercise in the comfort of your home. Exercise videos are plenty on the internet. Don’t let the cold deter you from getting your workout on.
